“THE INDEPENDENT SPIRIT” OF THE IIFF IS PERSONIFIED BY SIR ALAN PARKER

II IBIZA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
FRIDAY 23rd MAY TO SATURDAY 1st JUNE

With the screening of "The Commitments" this second edition of the Ibiza International Film Festival  opened, which aspires to become a European version of Sundance, the independent festival ‘pour excellence’.

And on this occasion paying homage to a figure as independent as he is established in movie circles: Alan Parker, the legendary creator of “The Wall” and many other masterpieces, who what’s more happens to be one of the Festival’s patrons.

Parker was born on St. Valentines day in 1944 and started directing early making adverts for the publicity agency where he worked from the age of 18.  He was so good at it that a good friend recommended he should try cinema and Parker threw himself into it.

After directing a couple of short films and a TV movie and writing a pair of scripts, in 1975 he released his first “real” film: “Bugsy Malone”, which won 5 British Cinema Academy prizes of 8 nominations.

Boosted by the success, the young film maker went to Los Angeles (where else?), where he met a young unknown script writer, none other than Oliver Stone (talk about an ability to pick a winner), who offered him the opportunity to make what would become his breakthrough into stardom, the hard hitting “Midnight Express” which won him two Oscars.

After this, another pair of Oscars for “Fame” (which later would spark off the hugely successful TV series and many years later the TV competition), a prize in Cannes for "Birdy", with the then unknown Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage, the innovative visual power of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”, 7 Oscar nominations and 3 Brit Awards for the racial drama “Mississippi Burning”, another 4 Academy Awards for “The Commitments”, 3 Golden Globe nominations for “Evita”… And that’s to mention but a few of his works.

The IIFF paid him a well deserved tribute, starting with the screening of “The Commitments” in San Antonio’s Cine Regio.  The film, of which there are very few remaining copies, had to be brought from the 20th Century Fox studios in London amongst the strictest of security measures by specialist transporters of valuable goods.

A luxury opportunity to discover or delve deeper into an emblematic figure who has explored endless cinematographic genres, all with excellent results.
