Players could be just another romantic comedy were it not for two circumstances: the aesthetics, closer to a music video; and especially its surrealist focus, telling the story as if it were a video game (hence the name: “Players”).
Xavi Ramon is player 1 “Lolo, Mr Pants”, who has to overcome a series of obstacles or “stages” not to be beaten by his girlfriend (the Madrid born actress Ana Morilla), who is player 5. In order to do this he’ll follow the advice of Javier Riera (player 3), which will be great in theory, but disastrous in practice.
This ‘short’ was the second surreal comedy from the dark minded Javier Riera and won the public’s prize in the 2004 Mostra de Cinema de Sant Antoni. Xavi Ramon’s acting – one of Riera’s regular actors – and some of the surreal gags like the Gregorian choir or Lolo’s “screw-up” are the best part of the film. The worst, the soundtrack.
