IN SEARCH ON THE AIR: SAVE RADIO UC IBIZA 87.8 FM
The cultural cooperative Radio UC is on the hunt for collaborators and new members interested in making radio and social communication. Their outline: “…to unite, relate, communicate, provoke. That’s being connected. To meet at different points and share views, knowledge, experience and actions. To encourage one idea to meet another and together form something new”.
Radio UC is a ship which has stayed afloat for decades and has witnessed political, social and existential changes on this island, which has always been its informational focus. Not only does it show us another way of making radio, for one and all but not ‘for the masses’, where whoever is prepared to join in is always more than welcome.
16 years non-stop on-the-air with social vocation providing an “open space free of market forces” according to its philosophy.
The collective asserts that it wants to: “build an area of sociability, a corner for conspiracy and cooperation where self-information activities are conceived and hatched, for the production, communication and transmission of wisdom, where the tools of innovation seek to achieve rights, ask new questions, make new wishes, make new worlds possible… where new friendships are forged within a collective insurgence for the construction of this rebel community, which Experiments – Invents – Transforms …always with joy”.
In order to achieve this they want the listener to interact actively by becoming the presenter. To this end Radio UC runs Radio Workshops. These are part of the ‘Eivissa Underground’ activities, organised by Ibiza Town Hall, showing coherence with the philosophy of an independent cultural cooperative. The bases and objectives of the workshops are as follows: * To know the creation and transmission processes of radio programmes of diverse genres and formats.
* To get used to the use of the distinct components which make up radio (Voice – Silence – Sound effects).
* To develop scripts and associated ideas for their application in programme production.
* To introduce participants to the world of investigative journalism for use in current affairs type programmes.
* To get used to using the basic tools for digital radio editing, using software like Audacity, Zara Radio… etc.
* To handle audio digitalisation tools to create artistic ‘sound bites’. Knowing how to put them all together in the radio’s programming schedule.
* To get used to the workings of Internet radio (streaming – podcast).
* To know diverse freeware and free use software applications.
* To get an idea of the installation, care and working of the different components of the broadcasting equipment (microphones, mixing desks, transmitters, etc.). The final aim after the workshops are finished is for participants to be self-sufficient radio producers and presenters. May the world hear what you have to say because nobody’s going to do it for you. Let’s save Radio UC, with its 16 years of service to the community, free of political or institutional bias.
