‘Bienes de Interés Cultural y Bienes Catalogados de les Illes Pitiüses’

‘Bienes de Interés Cultural y Bienes Catalogados de les Illes Pitiüses’, fourth volume of the ‘Patrimoni’  collection (heritage collection).

(BICs
or  Bienes de Interés Cultural  are places of cultural interest and Bienes catalogados  are the equivalent of listed monuments in the UK).

The book describes 37 BICs, 137 bienes catalogados and one immaterial asset which is the Caramelles de Nadal (Ibizan Christmas music played on traditional Ibizan instruments). In total, 175 entries, in what constitutes a delightful summary of the historical and artistic heritage of Ibiza and Formentera.

The volume isn’t very thick, it’s manageable and, as well as standing out gloriously on the shelf, it’s pleasant to read.  It isn’t a deep study on each and every one of the featured locations, but it does make up a small ‘route map’ to dive into the local heritage.

Every location has its own page, with a small text of some thirty lines, a couple of photos and a small map to show its location.  A clean and comfortable file which helps us understand the value of each entry.

Without a doubt, the inclusion of the map is a winner.  Thus, the fourth volume of ‘Patrimoni’  can also be used as a magnificent guide to plan short excursions through the island’s interior, in search of the small, hidden spring, the obscure well or the unknown chapel.

Where I’m concerned, thanks to this book I’ve been able to discover the location of the ancient mines of San Carlos and the 18th Century bridge on the old road from Ibiza city to San José.  Little things like this improve our quality of life.

This whole catalogue can also be found on the Internet, and can be accessed via the Council’s web page: www.cief.es.
