MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICO DEL PUIG DES MOLINS
ES CULLERAM AND ES PUIG DES MOLINS
Until the end of this October, ‘Es Culleram, 100 years’ can be visited in the hall of the ‘Museo Arqueológico del Puig des Molins’, an interesting exposition which shows how the Punic World worshipped the Goddess Tanit.
The museum has been closed to the public since 1995 due to the renovation work of the Archaeological Museum. It was hoped it would reopen its doors this 2007, to coincide with the celebrations for its centenary.
The museum is still being renovated, but the directors have set a ‘plan B’ in motion so that the afore-mentioned centenary will have its repercussions.
As Jordi Fernández, the Museum director explains: “It was sad to us that centenary of the Museum should have no repercussions so we decided to set up an exposition which would remember it with material taken from the ‘Es Culleram’ caves, whose first excavation, carried out by members of the ‘Sociedad Arqueológico Ebusitana’, also celebrates its centenary this year”.
The result is “Es Culleram, 100 años”, an exposition with a strong didactic feel in which you discover the life and work of one of the most important sanctuaries dedicated to the Goddess Tanit in the Mediterranean.
The display begins with its discovery by some local peasants, who launched the story when they announced the existence of diverse objects in the entrance of the cave of Sant Vicent de Sa Cala, starting point of a series of excavations which were finally concluded in 1981 and which recovered valuable material.
The finds made in the cave, some 600 figures, as well as heads and fragments of another 1000 more, make up one the most important collections of Punic art from the 3rd to 2nd century B.C. and the most numerous set of representations of the Carthaginian Goddess, Tanit, whose worship, as the finds on this site prove in contrary to long held opinions, was also practised here in Ibiza.
The Es Culleram, 100 años exhibition can be visited until the end of October.
