THE TOWER DES CARREGADOR

The Tower des Carregador de sa Sal was built in the second half of the XVI century. During the frequent raids carried out by Turkish and Berber pirates who laid waste to the Mediterranean, the Tower was conceived as a collective refuge for the inhabitants of the area and very especially for those who worked gathering salt, which was the main source of wealth of the island.

This is the main reason for its high capacity as it could accommodate between 150 and 200 persons comfortably, in contrast with other military towers, which only served as refuge for those assigned to serve there together with the weapons and ammunition required for the defence of the
fortification.

The visual signs used to communicate were fires at night and smoke by day. The fires were built on the platform so that they would be visible from afar.

The role of this Tower, located in Sant Francesc de S’Estany, was to defend Carregador de sa Sal, on of the main motors of the economy of the island. Other nearby towers such as the tower of ses Portes or that of s’Espalmador, were meant mainly to protect the pass between Ibiza and Formentera. The two tower keepers who were assigned to the Tower worked up to the end of 1867, when the job of tower keeper ceased to exist.

Open days:
The general public can visit the tower from June 27 to October 16.
Visiting times will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day, except Sunday, when it will remain closed.
